A Silent Threat: Understanding Brain Aneurysms by Dr Winnie Lim Khoo

A brain aneurysm, also known as a cerebral aneurysm, is a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain caused by a weakness in the blood vessel wall. This condition can be serious, as an aneurysm may leak or rupture, leading to a hemorrhagic stroke, which can cause significant brain damage or even be life-threatening.

Risk factors for developing a brain aneurysm include genetic predisposition, hypertension (high blood pressure), smoking, and certain medical conditions. Those with a family history of aneurysms or connective tissue disorders may be at higher risk.

While not all brain aneurysms can be prevented, controlling risk factors such as maintaining healthy blood pressure, quitting smoking, and managing stress can help reduce the risk of developing aneurysms and complications associated with them. Regular medical check-ups and awareness of personal risk factors are important for early detection and intervention.
